Magical Messi breaks record at
ongoing Copa America 2016


– Lionel Messi is now Argentina’s
record goal scorer of all time with 55
goals for the national team
– The Barcelona star scored a free-kick
as Argentina beat USA to reach the
final of the 2016 Copa America
– Argentina will play either Colombia or
reigning champions Chile in what could
be a repeat of last year’s final
Lionel Messi became his country’s leading scorer as
Argentina defeated hosts USA 4 – 0 to book a place
in the final of the 2016 Copa America tournament.
Lionel Messi and Argentina dominated Tuesday’s Copa
America semifinal.
The Barcelona attacker scored a superb free-kick to
surpass Gabriel Batistuta’s 54-goal tally with a
25-yard strike.
Messi provided the assist for Ezequiel Lavezzi’s
opener, then scored his stunner before Napoli’s
Gonzalo Higuain fired in to make it 3-0.
Higuain scored with a tap-in in the 85th minute to
complete the rout with Messi grabbing the assist.
“I am happy to have surpassed Batistuta’s
record and I want to thank my team-
mates, it’s theirs as well,” said Messi, who
turns 29 on Friday.
Argentina will play either Colombia or reigning
champions Chile, who meet in Chicago on
Wednesday.

Recall that Messi equalled Batistuta’s record in the
quarter-final which was through a freekick as
Argentina defeated Venezuela 4 – 1 to reach the
semi’s.
The Barcelona forward also created goals for
Gonzalo Higuain, who scored twice, and Erik Lamela
to set up a last-four meeting with hosts USA.
