Bukola Saraki and Danladi Umar…the face-off between both men

Justice Danladi Umar, the chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), has reacted to the calls for his resignation, PMnews reports

He has answered the embattled Senate president Bukola Saraki, who is currently facing trial at the CCT over alleged false declaration of assets.

Umar said that he can’t step down because he holds the position a representative of God.

The justice called Saraki’s attention to the fact that he has appeared three times before a committee set up by the National Assembly to probe the bribery accusations while his accusers did not honour the summon.

“I hold this position as a viceroy of God and if I didn’t do it the way he want me to do it, I will be removed,” Umar said.

He added that he can only be prosecuted by the Attorney General of the Federation if there were facts to do so and not based on mere suspicion.

At the same time, Rotimi Jacobs asked the CCT chairman to stop exchanging words with Saraki’s defence lawyer, Raphael Oluyede and instead speak through his ruling on the matter.

Saraki’s lawyer did not find the interference funny as he blamed the prosecution counsel for trying to take over proceedings in the court, leading to exchange of words between him and the prosecuting counsel.

Even when the Justice Umar asked him to stop, he denied leading to the judge threatening to send him to jail for contempt again.

Saraki has accused Umar of bias, insisting that he cannot get justice under his chairmanship.

The Senate president, in a motion he filed against Umar, asked the tribunal chairman to disqualify himself from further taking part in his trial on the alleged falsification of his assets
